Noxious Weeds
The State of Ohio, several years ago, published a list of noxious weeds. These plants were selected because they spread quickly, can inflict economic hardship on farmers because they will out compete most crops, are toxic to livestock and present a threat to public health safety or navigation.
There are 14 weeds on the list. Some of the more common ones include Wild Mustard, Poison Hemlock, Wild Carrot, Shattercain, Cressleaf Groundsel, Canada Thistle, and Johnson Grass.
If you want to see color pictures of these weeds and more details, log on to ohioline.osu.edu. At the first screen, type in “noxious weeds.” It will list the Extension bulletin #866 titled “Identifying Noxious Weeds in Ohio.” You can also purchase a hard copy at our office for $5.00.
Controlling these noxious weeds is the responsibility of the landowner. If numbers of these weeds warrant control, an adjacent property owner should contact their neighbor to get them to mow or spray these areas. As a last resort, you can contact your township trustees. They, in turn, have a responsibility to check out the problem and try to resolve the issue.
